Electrical Engineer V/VI - EWIS
At Zone 5 Technologies, we're redefining what's possible in precision weapons and unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). Our team of engineers and innovators are developing cutting-edge autonomous solutions to deliver affordable and scalable precision weapons, interceptors, and UAS.
We're building the next generation of munitions and unmanned systems for the United States and its allies. If you're driven by hard problems, energized by rapid innovation, and ready to make an impact on defense technology, you belong here.
The EWIS Engineer V/VI is a senior-level individual contributor role responsible for leading the design, development, and production support of Electrical Wiring Interconnection Systems (EWIS) for Zone 5 UAS and air-launched weapon platforms. This position owns the harness architecture from schematic through installation - ensuring wiring systems are safe, reliable, manufacturable, and compliant with aerospace and military standards. Engineers in this role will work closely with production to resolve build issues quickly and will mentor other engineers in EWIS best practices.
Responsibilities:
- EWIS Architecture: Define and own wiring interconnect architecture, including wire and connector selection, routing, separation, segregation, shielding, and bonding/grounding schemes.
- Harness Design: Create and maintain wire lists, pin-outs, schematics, harness drawings, and formboard layouts using electrical CAD tools.
- 3D Integration: Collaborate with Mechanical Engineering to route harnesses in 3D models, define clamping and support, and ensure installation clearance and maintainability.
- Standards Compliance: Ensure designs meet SAE AS50881 and applicable military specifications for wire, cable, connectors, and protective materials.
- Production Support: Serve as the primary engineering interface to harness manufacturing; resolve build issues, disposition nonconformances, and support Material Review Board (MRB) activities.
- Design for Manufacturability: Drive harness designs that reduce build time, rework, and cost while maintaining reliability.
- Verification & Test: Define harness acceptance test requirements (continuity, hi-pot, insulation resistance) and support integration and qualification testing.
- EMI/EMC Coordination: Partner with EMI/EMC engineering to implement shielding, filtering, and grounding approaches that meet MIL-STD-461 and MIL-STD-464 requirements.
- Configuration Control: Maintain EWIS documentation and drawing packages under configuration control and drive engineering change orders through implementation.
- Mentorship: Train and mentor junior engineers and technicians in EWIS design and harness fabrication practices.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
- Experience: 10+ years of experience in aircraft, missile, or aerospace wiring and harness design, with significant production support experience.
- Skills:
- Expert knowledge of SAE AS50881 and military wire, cable, and connector specifications (e.g., M22759, M27500, MIL-DTL-38999).
- Proficiency with electrical and harness CAD tools (e.g., Altium, SolidWorks Electrical, Siemens Capital, or Zuken E3.series).
- Strong understanding of power distribution, signal integrity, shielding, and bonding/grounding.
- Proven ability to close nonconformance issues and drive corrective action in a production environment.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration abilities.
- U.S. Person status required due to export control regulations.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with weapon and store interfaces (e.g., MIL-STD-1760) and avionics data buses (MIL-STD-1553, CAN, Ethernet).
- Familiarity with IPC/WHMA-A-620 and J-STD-001 workmanship standards.
- Familiarity with DO-160 and MIL-STD-704.
- Experience transitioning designs from prototype to rate production.
- Active U.S. security clearance or ability to obtain.
